According to the American Pregnancy Association, a normal-weight mother-to-be should gain 25-30 pounds during her pregnancy.

But even a healthy food, exercise and weight-gain regimen during pregnancy will leave a new mother with some work to do to get her body back to its pre-pregnancy state.

I can work with post-partum mothers as soon as the doctor or midwife gives the go-ahead, usually at about six weeks after a vaginal delivery. I design a program that includes aerobic exercise to increase circulation and to rebuild strength in your abdomen, lower back and pelvis. I also work with you to tighten many of the muscles stretched during pregnancy and birth.

A great side effect of post-partum exercise is the mother's enhanced sense of well-being. A healthy mind and a healthy body make it a lot easier to tackle the demands of caring for a baby, including lifting, carrying and later, chasing after a toddler.
